Russian cannibal trial halted as Karina Barduchian images make juror ill

The trial of two Russian men accused of chopping up a 16-year-old girl and eating her with potatoes has been postponed after a juror fell ill looking at prosecution images.

The case was postponed after the juror had to be excused while examining photographs of student Karina Barduchian after her death.

Maxim Golovatskikh and his friend florist Yury Mozhnov, both 20, are accused of drowning Karina Barduchian, in a bath, then carving up her body and serving her meat with potatoes to a lodger.

Before the case was halted, the lodger, Ekaterina Zinovyeva, told the court in St Petersburg they had a party with their Goth friends on the night of the murder in January, 2009.

Karina, who was in love with Golovatskikh, stayed the night, she said.

Hippy apes caught cannibalising their young

So much for the “hippy chimp”. Bonobos, known for their peaceable ways and casual sex, have been caught in the act of cannibalism.

An account of a group of wild bonobos consuming a dead infant, published last month, is the first report of cannibalism in these animals – making the species the last of the great apes to reveal a taste for the flesh of their own kind.

The account comes from a group of primatologists led by Gottfried Hohmann of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.

The team has studied bonobos in the wild at a site in Salonga national park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on hundreds of days since 2002. Few were more eventful than 9 and 10 July, 2008. Early on the morning of 9 July, Andrew Fowler spotted an ape known as Olga with her two daughters: 5 or 6-year-old Ophelia, and Olivia, who was three years her junior.

“By 8 o’clock Olivia was dead,” says Fowler. She showed no obvious traces of blood or bruises, so it seems unlikely she had been killed by other members of her group.

Fowler’s team lost sight of the apes not long afterwards, but early the following day he saw Olga join them carrying Olivia’s body, which had already begun to decompose. “It was smelling, limp and wet,” he recalls. Olga and seven others spent the rest of the day devouring the corpse.

Russian police have arrested three homeless people suspected of eating a 25-year-old man they had butchered and selling other bits of the corpse to a local kebab house.

Suspicions were raised when dismembered parts of a human body were found near a bus stop in the outskirts of the Russian city of Perm, 1,150 km (720 miles) east of Moscow.

Three homeless men with previous criminal records have been arrested on suspicion of setting upon a foe with knives and a hammer before chopping up his corpse to eat, local investigators said in a statement on their www.susk.perm.ru Web site.

Man’s Finger Bitten Off in Scuffle at Health Care Rally

A 65-year-old man had his finger bitten off Wednesday evening at a health care rally in Thousand Oaks, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s investigators were called to Hillcrest and Lynn Road at 7:26 p.m. About 100 protesters sponsored by MoveOn.org were having a rally supporting health care reform.

A group of anti-health care reform protesters formed across the street.

The finger-biting incident occurred after a member of the group protesting health care reform, William Rice, 65, of Newbury Park, became involved in a heated discussion with a member of Code Pink, sheriffs Capt. Ross Bonfiglio said. After the argument, Rice returned to where his own group was standing. A man from Moveon.orgs area then walked over to the opponents and verbally confronted Rice, allegedly calling him names and acting aggressively, Bonfiglio said.

Rice later told investigators he felt threatened by the man and punched him in the nose, Bonfiglio said.

The punch set off a fist fight between the two men, during which the tip of Rices left pinky finger was bitten off, Bonfiglio said.

Witnesses have testified in the case of 11 men in Burundi, accused of the attempted murder of albino people and selling of their body parts.

Initial charges of murder have been dropped because the prosecution failed to produce enough evidence.

Police suspect the body parts are being sold in neighbouring Tanzania, for use in witchcraft.

Forty-six albino people have been murdered in Tanzania in the past 18 months, but no-one has been convicted.

How Neanderthals met a grisly fate: devoured by human

One of science’s most puzzling mysteries – the disappearance of the Neanderthals – may have been solved. Modern humans ate them, says a leading fossil expert.The controversial suggestion follows publication of a study in the Journal of Anthropological Sciences about a Neanderthal jawbone apparently butchered by modern humans. Now the leader of the research team says he believes the flesh had been eaten by humans, while its teeth may have been used to make a necklace.

Fernando Rozzi, of Paris’s Centre National de la Récherche Scientifique, said the jawbone had probably been cut into to remove flesh, including the tongue. Crucially, the butchery was similar to that used by humans to cut up deer carcass in the early Stone Age.

“Neanderthals met a violent end at our hands and in some cases we ate them,” Rozzi said.
The idea will provoke considerable opposition from scientists who believe Neanderthals disappeared for reasons that did not involve violence. Neanderthals were a sturdy species who evolved in Europe 300,000 years ago, made complex stone tools and survived several ice ages before they disappeared 30,000 years ago – just as modern human beings arrived in Europe from Africa.

More than 300 stray dogs that were dumped on isolated islands turned to cannibalism after weeks of starvation, animal welfare activists said Thursday.

The plight of the dogs cast away by villagers on two small, uninhabited islands off Malaysia’s western Selangor state ignited outrage after activists this week released photographs showing dogs eating the carcasses of ones that had died.

Residents of a fishing village on Pulau Ketam, another island off Selangor, caught the dogs last month and took them to the islands covered in mangroves. The villagers said they never intended to be cruel — they believed the dogs could feed on the deserted islands’ wildlife — but wanted to rid their island of dogs that defecate on the streets and sometimes bite children.

Summer is over in the northern hemisphere, but it’s been another chilling season for researchers who study Arctic sea ice.

“It’s definitely a bad report. We did pick up little bit from last year, but this is over 30 percent below what used to be normal,” said Walt Meier, a research scientist with the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado.

This past summer, the Arctic sea ice dwindled to its second lowest level. Arctic sea ice is usually one to three meters, or as much as 9 feet thick. It grows during autumn and winter and shrinks in the spring and summer.

Scientists have monitored sea ice conditions for about 50 years with the help of satellites. Changes in the past decade have been alarming to climate researchers and oceanographers.

“It is the second lowest on record … If anything it is reinforcing the long-term trend. We are still losing the ice cover at a rate of 10 percent per decade now, and that is quite an increase from five years ago,” said Meier. “We are still heading toward an ice cover that is going to melt completely in the summertime in the Arctic.”

Greyhound has scrapped an ad campaign that extolled the relaxing upside of bus travel after one of its passengers was accused of beheading and cannibalizing another traveler.

The ad’s tag line was “There’s a reason you’ve never heard of ‘bus rage.’”

Greyhound spokeswoman Abby Wambaugh said Wednesday a billboard and some tunnel posters near a bus terminal in Toronto are still up and would be removed later in the day.

Kalra Mauerova, 31, of Brno in the Czech Republic, wept in court as she admitted torturing her son Ondrej, and his ten-year-old brother, Jakub, The Sun reported.

Mauerova, a member of the Grail Movement cult, caged Ondrej for months while relatives, also members of the cult, ate his raw flesh, a judge heard yesterday.

The court in Brno heard the family sexually abused the boys and made them cut themselves with knives.

The boys said they were kept in cages or handcuffed to tables and made to stand for days in their own urine.

The abuse was discovered when a man living nearby installed a TV monitor to keep watch on his newborn baby.

Instead of pictures of his newborn he was confronted by live images of Ondrej naked in the cellar — beaten and chained, The Sun reported.

Mauerova is understood to have installed the monitor so she could watch her victims suffering from her kitchen.

Japan on Tuesday executed three people including notorious serial killer Tsutomu Miyazaki, a fetishist convicted of murdering four young girls and eating some of their bodies, officials said.

Survivors of a plane crash who spent five days in freezing temperatures in Chile said they considered eating the pilot, a British newspaper reports.

According to The Guardian, the Cessna 208 was just 10 minutes from landing when it crashed into a Patagonian mountain near the border with Argentina on Saturday.

“We were flying in very bad conditions. There was rain and sleet. Suddenly, we went into a cloud and when we came out, we were in front of the mountain,” passenger Jose Miguel Almonacid told The Guardian. “I managed to scream ‘watch out’ when I heard the explosion.”

The pilot, Nelson Bahamondes, survived the crash but died from blood loss two days later. “He had a cut on his head, a big wound and he lost lots of blood,” said Victor Suazo, a Chilean police officer who was on board.

Grim tales of cannibalism highlighting the brutality of West Africa’s civil wars emerged in testimony Thursday at the war crimes trial of former Liberian President Charles Taylor.

Joseph “Zigzag” Marzah, who described himself as Taylor’s chief of operations and head of the death squad before Taylor became president, said African peacekeepers and even United Nations personnel were killed and eaten on the battlefield by Taylor’s militiamen.

Prosecutors described Marzah as a key witness with inside knowledge of the former Liberian president’s operations in Liberia and neighboring Sierra Leone, where he is accused of responsibility for the widespread murder, rape and amputations committed by soldiers loyal to him.

Taylor, 59, has pleaded not guilty to 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity. He is accused of orchestrating violence in Sierra Leone’s civil war, which ended in 2002, and trading in illegally mined diamonds to finance the conflict.

Officials: Suspect killed, tried to eat girlfriend

A man held on a capital murder charge in the death of his 21-year-old girlfriend tried to cook and eat her body before police arrived, authorities said today.

The woman’s death and mutilation were apparently the beginning of a crime spree that included the murder suspect stabbing the boyfriend of his estranged wife and breaking into a business. The stabbing victim is in critical condition at an area hospital, officials said.

Christopher Lee McCuin, 25, of Tyler, is in the Smith County Jail on a $2 million bond today and did not have an attorney, officials said.

British ‘cannibal’ jailed for killing girlfriend

A British man who claimed to have chopped up and eaten his girlfriend is facing 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to her manslaughter.

Paul Durant, 47, was arrested in February 2004 on suspicion of murdering Karen Durrell, 41, a divorced mother of two from Ilford, Essex.

She disappeared shortly after meeting Durant just days after she moved to the Costa Blanca on Spain’s southeastern coast in January 2004.

Mexico City police made the grisly discoveries this week as they arrested the man the Mexican press is calling the nation’s first cannibalistic serial killer.

Police said Jose Luis Calva Zepeda, 40, was arrested Monday and being held for “probable” homicide after an investigation into the disappearance of his girlfriend. Investigators found the mutilated body of Alejandra Galeana, 30, in Calva’s closet and believe Calva killed and mutilated at least two other women since 2004

Ozgur Dengiz was arrested in the Mamak area of Ankara recently for the murder and consumption of 55-year-old council worker Cafer Er.

Er had been missing for a week when the police discovered his corpse in the public garbage dump in Mamak. On closer examination of the body, it became apparent that Er had been murdered and his body mutilated. Large chunks of flesh had been cut from the soft parts of his body. Further investigation by the homicide squad turned up information that Er had last been seen arguing with a young man in the council park he was responsible for keeping clean.

Teenager confesses to killing and eating room-mate

A teenager has confessed to murdering a man he met in a homeless shelter and eating parts of his brain and internal organs.

The 19-year-old, named only as Robert A, is alleged to have killed his 49-year-old room-mate by crushing his skull with a 20lb (9kg) iron bar, before using a butcher’s knife to remove the man’s intestines.

The murder is believed to have taken place at least three days ago and was discovered yesterday when a cleaner entered the shelter. The man allegedly told her about the murder and asked her to inform the police.

Officers who arrived at the ground-floor flat in the 15th district of Vienna found the body lying in a pool of blood, with body parts spread around the room. Half-eaten parts were found on a plate in the kitchen.

Meatball art made from human fat

Last year, Chilean-born artist Marco Evaristti mixed fat removed from his body by liposuction with ground beef to make meatballs, which he fried in olive oil and displayed in a public gallery.

This year, he plans to climb Western Europe’s highest mountain, Mont Blanc on the French-Italian border, color the summit pink and declare it an independent state, with himself as president.

His work has been slammed as disgusting, publicity-seeking and immoral but Evaristti says he is simply trying to highlight some of the double standards he sees in the world around him.

Cannibal ‘Black Jesus’ Faces Death Penalty

A religious cult leader who raped, murdered and ate at least three women in Papua New Guinea has been captured by a group of villagers. Steven Tari, 35, who called himself the “black Jesus” was beaten by locals from the village of Matepi before being handed over to police. The failed bible student had gathered around six thousand followers as he travelled through mountain villages promising disciples gifts from heaven if they joined his congregation.

Cannibal loses final appeal

A German cannibal, jailed for life for killing and eating a willing victim in a case that shocked the nation, lost an appeal against his sentence and will serve at least 15 years in prison, a court ruled on Friday.

“The life-long sentence means the defendant can be released no sooner than in 15 years – and then only if he is no longer dangerous,” the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe, Germany’s highest appeals court, has said.

Victim Bernd-Juergen Brandes travelled by train to meet cannibal Armin Meiwes in the western town of Rotenburg after the two men made contact over the internet.

Meiwes then videotaped himself severing the victim’s penis with a knife before both men tried to eat it.

Indian serial killer suspect admits sex with dead bodies:

A suspect in the gruesome murders of 17 people, mostly children, near the Indian capital has told investigators he had sex with the dead bodies and ate their organs, a report has said. The Times of India said Surender Koli admitted to carrying out the crimes alone and that his employer, businessman Moninder Singh Pandher who has also been arrested and charged, was unaware of the killing spree.

France probes ‘cannibalism’ case

A French prosecutor says he suspects an act of cannibalism was carried out on a prisoner by a cellmate in the northern city of Rouen. Cannibalism was “very likely”, the prosecutor said after an autopsy showed that some organ parts were missing.
