“DC Madam” Posts Phone Records Online
In a move that will certainly set into motion hundreds of bloggers and journalists eager to unearth the next Washington sex scandal, Deborah Jeane Palfrey, aka the “DC Madam,” has posted 13 years worth of phone records on her website Monday afternoon. The records cover Palfrey’s time as head of “Pamela Martin & Associates,” a Washington, D.C.-based escort service. As Yeas & Nays noted last week, U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler recently lifted the temporary restraining order prohibiting Deborah Jeane Palfrey from releasing those telephone records.
During an interview with Yeas & Nays last Thursday, Palfrey indicated that she had “every intention” of releasing her records to the public, but the move to post them on her website so quickly was not anticipated by many.

Alleged DC madam can distribute records
A woman accused of running a prostitution ring in the nation’s capital is free to distribute thousands of pages of phone records after a federal judge lifted a restraining order on Thursday.
U.S. District Court Judge Gladys Kessler’s order granted the request of Deborah Jeane Palfrey, 51, of Vallejo, Calif., to quash restrictions by government prosecutors that prohibited her from giving away the list.
“As a result, Jeane has determined to release those records under certain conditions to qualified individuals or organizations,” wrote her attorney, Montgomery Blair Sibley, in an e-mail.

Tojo’s granddaughter vows to take on WWII issues if elected
The granddaughter of wartime Prime Minister Hideki Tojo said Tuesday if she wins election later this month for a seat in the Diet she will push to strengthen the military, rewrite the history of the Rape of Nanking and move to censure the United States for dropping atomic bombs on Japan.
Yuko Tojo is seeking a seat in the Upper House of the Diet. She is running as an independent after being rejected by the ruling conservative party.
Tojo told a news conference one of her primary goals in office would be to settle issues from World War II that remain deeply controversial.
On Japan’s mobilization of tens to hundreds of thousands of “comfort women” to serve in front-line brothels, Tojo said the government was not directly involved, a commonly held belief among Japanese conservatives despite evidence to the contrary.

Injuries after political punch up
Fight, fight, fight. We all like a good punch up – especially when it involves politicians.
Rival lawmakers exchanged punches, climbed on each other’s shoulders and jostled violently for position around the speaker as Taiwan’s Legislature dissolved into chaos over an electoral reform bill.
The scenes recalled past legislative brawls in Taiwan, which began a gradual transition from dictatorship to democracy in 1987, and remains riven by passionate fighting between its two major political blocs.

DIRTY ‘TRICKS’
The bombshell sex probe of a Washington, D.C., madam that already has caught one Bush administration official with his pants down may soon focus on well-known political pundits who have appeared on TV.
“There are several thousand names, tens of thousands of phone numbers, from administration officials to lobbyists to advisers who are well known, people who appear on television,” said ABC News’ Brian Ross, to whom alleged madam Deborah Jeane Palfrey turned over her little black book.
In an interview with CNN, Ross refused to identify any more of the customers of Palfrey’s “escort service” and did not indicate whom he might name in a segment of ABC’s “20/20″ scheduled to air Friday.
The explosive revelation of the list has had powerbrokers quaking in their boots since Palfrey was pinched by the feds last month.

Alleged D.C. Madam Starts Naming Names in Sex Scandal
A woman charged with running a D.C.-area prostitution ring on Thursday made good on her threat to identify high-profile clients, naming a military strategist who developed the combat theories known as “shock and awe” as a regular customer in court papers. Harlan K. Ullman, a senior associate with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, was named in court papers filed by Deborah Jeane Palfrey, who is acting as her own lawyer. Ullman, in a brief telephone interview, declined comment on the claim. “The allegations are beneath the dignity of a comment,” he said.

Dianne Feinstein: A Question of Ethics:
In the November 2006 election, the voters demanded congressional ethics reform. And so, the newly appointed chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., is now duly in charge of regulating the ethical behavior of her colleagues. But for many years, Feinstein has been beset by her own ethical conflict of interest, say congressional ethics experts.
As chairperson and ranking member of the Military Construction Appropriations subcommittee (MILCON) from 2001 through the end of 2005, Feinstein supervised the appropriation of billions of dollars a year for specific military construction projects. Two defense contractors whose interests were largely controlled by her husband, financier Richard C. Blum, benefited from decisions made by Feinstein as leader of this powerful subcommittee.

D.C. Madam Case Leads to Speculation:
High-priced call girls always seem to have their little black books. Deborah Jeane Palfrey, accused of running an illegal escort service in the nation’s capital, has 46 pounds of phone records. And her offer – or threat – to turn them over to the media has some in Washington playing a guessing game as to whether any Beltway movers and shakers are on her list of up to 15,000 client phone numbers.

Mass. governor’s first weeks are rocky
As a candidate, Deval Patrick won over voters with a message of hope and renewed confidence in government. Now, eight turbulent weeks into his term, Massachusetts’ first black governor is already pleading: “Don’t give up on me.”
First, the 50-year-old former chief of the Justice Department’s civil rights division under the Clinton administration was criticized for using a state helicopter to zip from one end of the state to the other. Then he found himself defending his decision to upgrade his state car to a $1,166-a-month Cadillac.
Soon came news of pricey new drapes for the governor’s office, a $72,000 appointments secretary for his wife and a call to Citigroup on behalf of a struggling lending company on whose board he once served — a move that prompted a call for an ethics investigation by the Republicans.

DC Madame to sell 10,000 phone records of high-end Washington clients
Deborah J. Palfrey is unhappy. And, if you know who Deborah J. Palfrey is—and especially if you know her by Jeane—you probably don’t want her unhappy. From 1993 until this past summer, Palfrey ran Pamela Martin and Associates, a “high-end adult fantasy firm which offered legal sexual and erotic services across the spectrum of adult sexual behavior,” according to a statement she put out today hoping to raise funds for her legal defense.
The way she plans to raise those funds could reverberate through Washington’s power corridors. She is considering “selling the entire 46 pounds of detailed and itemized phone records for the 13 year period,” reports The Politico’s Ryan Grim. In October, the Internal Revenue Service seized her assets; the sale of the records would fund her fight against the seizure.

Spitzer’s Secret Senate Slush Fund
Governor Spitzer is planning to funnel millions of dollars in borrowed state money to Senate Democrats, who have been secretly asked by the administration to submit their wish lists for local capital projects, according to lawmakers.
The move marks the governor’s boldest effort to solidify his influence over the Democratic conference, whose support he is counting on in the short term to give him an edge during negotiations, and in the long term to play an instrumental role in pushing through his governing agenda.
For the past month, Senate Democrats have been submitting the paperwork for tens of millions of dollars in grants unbeknownst to most other lawmakers. There is no written agreement between Mr. Spitzer and the conference; the administration discussed the possibility of funding Senate Democratic projects with Minority Leader Malcolm Smith, who passed on the message to conference members at a private meeting.

McCain taps cash he sought to limit
Just about a year and a half ago, Sen. John McCain went to court to try to curtail the influence of a group to which A. Jerrold Perenchio gave $9 million, saying it was trying to “evade and violate” new campaign laws with voter ads ahead of the midterm elections.
As McCain launches his own presidential campaign, however, he is counting on Perenchio, the founder of the Univision Spanish-language media empire, to raise millions of dollars as co-chairman of the Arizona Republican’s national finance committee.

Kerry, Casey Benefit From Indicted Philly Pol’s Favors
A powerful Philadelphia politician charged with a litany of federal corruption offenses is accused of illegally using state government resources to help his political allies, including Democratic Sens. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts and Robert P. Casey Jr. of Pennsylvania.
According to a 139-count federal indictment returned Tuesday, Vincent J. Fumo, an eight-term Democratic Pennsylvania senator, dispatched a state computer technician to help set up campaign operations for a 2004 presidential candidate, a 2002 Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate and a congressional candidate. And, the indictment charges, Fumo directed a state-paid investigator to dig up dirt on the gubernatorial candidate’s opponent for the Democratic nomination.

Charges of Bigotry Fly in John Edwards Blogger Flap
In response to John Edwards’ refusal to fire two staffers for “intolerant” Web postings, the president of the nation’s largest Catholic civil rights group said he will launch a campaign next week to point out “the double-standard that [Edwards] is the kingmaker of.”
Bill Donohue, president of the conservative-leaning Catholic League and the first to call on the Democratic presidential candidate to fire the bloggers, told FOXNews.com that he is not satisfied with Edwards’ decision to scold — but not can — the staffers.
…
”He’s nothing more than David Duke with a blow-dried haircut,” Donohue said of Edwards.

Cold War contacts
According to this research and released KGB papers, Mr. Kennedy felt that the booming economy during Mr. Reagan’s presidency made him popular — and thus a difficult target for Democratic criticism. Because of this, Mr. Kennedy reportedly felt that Mr. Reagan’s only weakness was in foreign policy. Here, the articles say Mr. Kennedy felt the Soviets might be of assistance, if Mr. Kennedy and the Democrats could get the ear of the general-secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
Numerous articles also said that this anti-Reagan/anti-U.S. conspiracy was not a one-man operation by Mr. Kennedy. They indicate that former Sen. John V. Tunney, a California Democrat, went to Moscow and met with officials of the KGB on Mr. Kennedy’s behalf. Additionally, in their book “The Sword And The Shield,” Christopher Andrew and Vasili Metrokhin said that as early as 1975 the KGB began operations to penetrate the inner circles of a number of leading Democrats, including the likes of Mr. Kennedy and Ramsey Clark. They also mentioned that a Democratic Party activist had been recruited by the KGB and had supplied the Soviets with information from a variety of Democratic leaders, including President Carter.

The Day After the Day After:
So you’re Alex Tourk. Everything is fine and honky dorky until your wife, out of the blue, admits to having a fling with not only your boss but one of your best buddies. Even worse, it appears the everyone in the city (except us) knew about it but you didn’t. Man, that’s one hell of a bad week. Whenever we see these storylines on TV or in the movies, it always ends badly, like in people being shot and killed badly.

Biden Tells Dems He Regrets Obama Remark
Sen. Joe Biden expressed regret Saturday for describing presidential rival Barack Obama as an articulate and clean African-American, trying to stem damage to his nascent 2008 campaign. “So, how was your week?” Biden, D-Del., said as he took the podium at the Democratic National Committee’s winter meeting. He broke into a wide smile and then a chuckle as audience members laughed. Then he turned serious.

Reid’s Whitewater
“It’s hard to buy undeveloped land in booming northern Arizona for $166 an acre. But now-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid effectively did just that when a longtime friend decided to sell property owned by the employee pension fund that he controlled.
In 2002, Reid (D-Nev.) paid $10,000 to a pension fund controlled by Clair Haycock, a Las Vegas lubricants distributor and his friend for 50 years. The payment gave the senator full control of a 160-acre parcel in Bullhead City that Reid and the pension fund had jointly owned.
“Reid’s price for the equivalent of 60 acres of undeveloped desert was less than one-tenth of the value the assessor placed on it at the time. Six months after the deal closed, Reid introduced legislation to address the plight of lubricants dealers.” And that’s not all. The newspaper reports that “since taking full control of the parcel in 2002, Reid has pushed for federal funding for a new bridge over the Colorado River a few miles from his property.”

Presidential hopeful falls for radio hoax:
A radio comedian heaped fresh embarrassment on Ségolène Royal yesterday when he revealed how he had fooled the Socialist candidate for the French presidency into making unguarded comments on the taboo subject of Corsican independence.
Gérald Dahan, 33, said that he called Ms Royal on Wednesday pretending to be the prime minister of Quebec. The call came after Ms Royal had sparked a diplomatic row by backing demands for the French-speaking province to split from Canada.
Mr Dahan — an impressionist who is well-known for fooling French celebrities — said that he convinced at least five of Ms Royal’s advisers that he was Jean Charest, Quebec’s prime minister, before speaking to her for 11 minutes.

Taiwan legislature dissolves into chaos over reform
A ruling party law maker threw a shoe at the speaker of Taiwan’s Legislature on Friday and assorted colleagues engaged in protracted pushing and shoving, as the final day of the winter legislative session dissolved into disarray. The scenes were reminiscent of past Taiwanese legislative brawls, and represented another low point in the island’s sometimes stormy transition from dictatorship to democracy.

A slim guidebook for executing a deposed ruler
The Ceausescus of Romania were dragged to their executions on Christmas Day 1989 with Nicolae singing “The Internationale” and Elena alternately directing her captors to hell and snapping at them, “I was like a mother to you.” Or so go accounts by some of the executioners. Videotape shown on Romanian television in the aftermath records scenes from a farcical tribunal but stops as the couple are led away after they are condemned, picking up again only after the deed is done, the bullet-pocked bodies cooling where they fell. The event did not need cellphones and YouTube to peel back the veneer of civility.

Jobs Alleged To Be Involved In Apple Options Mess
“The representation that Apple made that Steve didn’t benefit from this, if you follow that string of events, it’s not consistent with the fact,” said industry analyst Rob Enderle.
Jobs may not be the only high profile figure involved.
Former vice president Al Gore was in charge of the committee appointed by Apple that cleared Steve Jobs. If there are new, damaging revelations, Enderle says Gore’s integrity would be on the line.

Protesters disrupt press conference on lobbying reform
House Democrats tried to unveil their lobbying reform package today, but their press conference was drowned out by chants from anti-war activists who want Congress to stop funding the Iraq war before taking on other issues. Led by Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a slain soldier, the protesters chanted “De-escalate, investigate, troops home now” as Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., began outlining the Democrats’ plans to ban lobbyist-funded travel and institute other ethics reforms. The press conference was held in the Cannon House Office Building in an area open to the public.

Incoming Judiciary Committee Chair Admits Breaking Ethics Rules:
John Conyers (D-Mich.) “accepted responsibility” for breaking House Ethics rules (and possibly some laws) for requiring “his official staffers to work on campaigns, babysit his children, and run personal errands.” So what does the House Ethics Committee do to punish him? They quietly released a public statement, perfectly timed to minimize coverage in the press, that simply says Conyers ought to refrain from breaking ethics rules and laws in the future.
